Dhyāna in Sanskrit, Jhāna in Pāli, ch'an-na or ch'an in Chinese, zenna or zen in Japanese - the four stages of absorption of the world of form, the condition for which is the removal of the five hindrances.

Meditation, general term for a multitude of reigious practices, often quite different in methods, but all having the same goal: to bring the consciousness of the practitioner to a state in which he can come to an experience of "awakening," "liberation", "enlightenment."  Esoteric schools of various religions, i.e., schools pratically concerned with individuals' own religious experience, have developed different "ways" leading to this experience, which are suited to their respective historical and geographical circumstances as well as to the psychological dispositions and personality types of different individuals or groups.
from: The Shambhala Dictionary of Buddhism and Zen

[Dhyana is the process as Samadhi is the state of advanced meditation.]
